Perris To Convert Figure 8, Mini Stock Road Course, and Quarter-Mile Tracks to Grass for Nights of Destruction By Scott Daloisio Perris, California — April 1, 2026 — Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian has announced that beginning with the next Night of Destruction, the Figure 8, Mini Stock road course, and the quarter-mile portions of the track used for Demo Cross will be run on grass. The transformation of the surfaces began after the last sprint car and stock car races at the famous Riverside County speed plant on March 21st. That gives the new grass five weeks to germinate and begin to grow. The new “racing lawn” is already coming in nicely. “I was watching Speedway racing from England on YouTube, and they showed some highlights of grass track racing,” Kazarian said. “It was wild. It did not hit me at first, but then I thought, Night of Destruction is crazy and this is wild too. Why not combine the two? The next morning, I contacted the Detroit Grass Seed Company. They have a special tough turf that is going to stand up well to the rigors of Night of Destruction.” One of the aspects that will add excitement is when the track is watered before the Demo Cross main; it will be just as slippery as it was when the track was watered without grass. The competitors will be slipping and searching for traction just like they have since the track first hosted Night of Destruction over a decade ago. And when the track is watered, the grass will get watered, too. Extra maintenance will also be needed to take care of the grass. It will have to be mowed so it does not turn into an overgrown weed patch. “I called Lane Hofarth, last year’s Figure 8 Trailer Champion,” Kazarian said. “He and his sons race in four of the five classes at Night of Destruction. I asked Lane if they would not mind putting large lawn mower blades under all of their cars, and he agreed. We will have to cut it down between races as well, so it will get trimmed at least two times a month and look nice.” When contacted, Hofarth, who is loved by fans for destroying boats and jet skis at Night of Destruction, was only too happy to take on the job. “This is going to be fun, plus we can help out with the track. We attached the blades and tested them in the front yard. They took out some divots, but we adjusted them and they work well. If our cars do not get torn up at Night of Destruction, we can possibly go out and earn some extra money for racing by cutting lawns.” There was only one concern coming into the deal. The quarter-mile inner oval shares the same front and back straightaways used by the sprint cars and stock cars in their shows, so something had to be figured out. “When I first got the idea, that was the one thing I was worried about,” Kazarian related. “The sprint cars and stocks could not run on grass. At first, I thought about asking them to run a slick tire, but that would not work, as there would still be the clay portion of the track in the corners, and asking them to purchase other tires would be expensive.” “I tried to think of several different ways to cover those portions of the track,” Kazarian continued. “The best and safest thing I came up with was tarps. They would be easy to put on and easy to take off. So, I went on Amazon and bought a bunch of heavy 20 x 30-foot blue tarps. We are in the process of melding them together so they will be ready for the sprint car/stock car show on April 11.” When asked what the sprint car and stock car drivers and owners have said about the tarps, Kazarian responded, “I have not exactly told them yet.” Before heading back to water his new racetrack lawn, Kazarian added with a wink and a smile, “I hope everyone has a very happy April Fools’ Day.
