SPRINT CARS RETURN TO PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY SATURDAY FOR GLENN HOWARD CLASSIC!
By Scott Daloisio

(Perris, CA, September 15, 2019)
Perris Auto Speedway will send the summer out with a bang this Saturday night, September 21st, with the 12th Annual Glenn Howard Memorial for the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Cars. The PAS Senior & Young Gun Sprints will also be a part of the card and the dazzling Western Racing Association vintage cars will be on hand as well. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 P.M. with racing at 7:00. At intermission, all kids will be allowed onto the front straightaway to meet and collect candy from all the drivers.

The "Big Game Hunter," Austin Williams, has moved up to second in the USAC/CRA standings. Doug Allen photo.

Saturday’s race honors the late Glenn Howard, who was part of the Southern California racing scene for more than 50 years as a driver, car owner, official, racing business owner and innovator. In addition, he was instrumental in many driver’s careers on and off the track.

“This race is always huge for so many of our drivers,” promoter Don Kazarian said. “Glenn did so much not only for the sport, but also for the people in the sport. When you think about it, there was nothing he did not or could not do. I think the reason most drivers want to win it is the fact that he helped everybody. He wanted to make the sport better for everyone and that is exactly what he did for a very long time. Everyone misses him as he is one of those guys you just cannot replace. Even though he passed away 12-years ago, his impact is still felt in the sport today and it will be felt forever. It has been and always will be an honor to host The Glenn Howard Classic at The PAS.”

When Glenn passed away, his family stayed involved in the sport as his son Steve continued to run the family business, SoCal Performance. However, since his passing, Glenn’s wife Pat, Steve and his other son Gary have also passed away. Gary’s passing came just a few months ago.

“We really honor the entire family now,” Kazarian said. “His wife Pat was a beautiful lady with a heart of gold. His sons Steve and Gary were good sprint car drivers. Both were very fast and fearless. They were the perfect picture of old school sprint car drivers and they both won main events in the hay day of the original CRA.”

Thus far, 2019 has been a very competitive season for the USAC/CRA Series at The PAS. Six of the group’s first 16 races have been at the track and those races have provided five-different winners. Only Richard Vander Weerd, who was born in Upland, raised in Chino and who now lives in Visalia, has been a repeat winner at the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval this year. Besides Vander Weerd’s two wins, Garden Grove’s Brody Roa, Hunter Schuerenberg of Sikeston, Missouri, perennial series champion Damion Gardner of Concord and Anaheim’s Jake Swanson have one win each.

The PAS Senior and Young Gun Sprints will conclude their 2019 season on Saturday night. Seeking his second straight Senior Sprint championship, former Speedway Motorcycle racer and Wheel2Wheel Raceway promoter John Aden, who resides in Apple Valley, has a comfortable 35-point lead over Santa Fe Springs racer Ed Schwarz going into the race. Dan Taylor, a native of Reily, Ohio, is third in the standings. Ramona’s Amanda Roberson already has the Young Gun championship sewed up.

Tickets are $25.00 for adults. Seniors 65 and over get in for $20.00. For active military with proper id and their spouse or date, it is $5.00 each. Teens 13-18 with their school id and kids 6-12 get in for $5.00. Children 5 and under are free. Parking on the fairgrounds is $8.00.

Advance tickets for all Perris Auto Speedway events are available 24-hours a day online at https://bit.ly/2Aa50Lj or by calling 1-800-595-4849. If you do not wish to buy tickets in advance for any race, there will be plenty of tickets for everyone at the ticket window on race night.

Perris Auto Speedway is conveniently located on the SoCal Fair and Event Center (home of October’s Southern California Fair), approximately one-hour east of Los Angeles and one-hour North of San Diego.
