TRICK OR TREATING FOR THE KIDS AT PERRIS’ LAST STOCK CAR RACE SATURDAY!
By Scott Daloisio

(Perris, CA, October 23, 2018) When Perris Auto Speedway hosts “Champion’s Night” for the PASSCAR Stock Car Series this Saturday, October 27th, there will be something extra for younger racing fans. All kids who show up in their Halloween costumes will be allowed onto the race track at intermission to trick or treat between all the drivers and cars. Saturday’s racing program will feature the final race of 2018 for the PASSCAR Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Modifieds and the American Factory Stocks. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 P.M. and the first race will be at 7:00.

After the preliminary heat races at intermission on Saturday, all the drivers and cars will line up on the front straightaway. They will have bags of candy and goodies. Kids in costume will be allowed onto the track for the entire intermission to collect the treats.

Two years ago, the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval decided to host the ghosts and goblins for trick or treating on short notice. Despite the late announcement, the startling amount of kids who showed up in costume was amazing and it added to their night of fun at the races.

“Two years ago, before the final stock car race, Shelly Wooldridge from P.R.E. sent us a message wondering about having kids in costumes trick or treat with the drivers at intermission,” promoter Don Kazarian said. “We figured with only 48-hours’ notice, we would only have a couple dozen kids show up in costume. We were shocked when several hundred kids came through the gates dressed for Halloween. They had a great time walking on the track, looking at the cars, meeting the drivers and of course, collecting a lot of candy. So, we did it again last year and we about doubled the number of kids in costume. It is now an annual event at the track. It is a fun, safe way for kids to trick or treat. The kids and their parents love it. I am not sure who has had more fun the first two years. The kids or the drivers.”

Champions will be crowned in the Super Stock, Modified, Street Stock and Factory Stock classes on Saturday. Unlike the past few seasons, The PAS has gone back to the “old school” way of deciding its champions. The driver in each class who accumulates the most points throughout the year is crowned champion. The past few years, drivers who won main events during the regular season were eligible for the championships in their respective classes. The driver who finished highest among those eligible in the main event on the final night was crowned champ.

“The drivers asked us to go back to the old system after last year,” Kazarian said. “So, that is what we did. With the winner of the last race being crowned champion, you could have a guy lead every lap of every race all season-long and then lead every lap of the last race only to blow a tire coming out of turn four and not win the title. Fortunately, we never had a scenario unfold quite like that. Going back to season long points to decide the champion is much fairer to everyone.”

The champion in each class will receive a $1,000.00 bonus and two drivers have already clinched titles going into the finale. Riverside’s Luke Dodd has already sewn up his third straight and fifth overall championship in the Street Stocks and El Cajon’s Mike Lerwell has his second Super Stock title in three years already in the bag.

In the Modifieds, three drivers are still in contention for the crown. Winnemucca, Nevada’s Cory Sample leads Yucaipa’s Chuck Becker, a two-time Modified champion at the track, by 11-points. In third-place and only 20-points behind the leader is two-time track superstock champion Terry Hershberger of Corona.

The best fight for a track title comes in the American Factory Stocks where Cameron Veatch of Temecula and Todd Fassler of El Cajon are deadlocked for the lead with 154-points each. Nuevo’s Mike Burks is third and is only nine points behind the leaders. Menifee’s Kris Carnish is fourth in the standings and could end up tied for the lead if the other three do not score points in the heats and do not start the main.
Adult tickets for Saturday night’s race are $15.00. For active military with proper id, students 13-16 with their school id and kids 6-12, tickets are only $5.00. Children 5 and under are free. Parking on the fairgrounds is $8.00.
