USAC/CRA SPRINT CARS IN GLENN HOWARD
MEMORIAL SATURDAY AT PERRIS!
By Scott
Daloisio
(Perris, CA, September 19, 2018)
Perris Auto Speedway will send the summer
out with a bang this Saturday night,
September 22nd, with the 11th Annual Glenn
Howard Memorial for the Amsoil USAC/CRA
Sprint Cars. The PAS Senior & Young Gun
Sprints will also be a part of the card
and the dazzling Western Racing
Association vintage cars will be on hand.
Spectator gates will open at 5:00 P.M.
with racing at 7:00.

Memorial this Saturday at Perris Auto
Speedway. Please give photo credit to Doug

Saturday’s
race honors the late Glenn Howard, who was
part of the Southern California racing
scene for more than 50 years as a driver,
car owner, official, racing business owner
and innovator. He helped hundreds of
drivers in their careers. Ironically,
Saturday’s race will be 11-years to the
day that Howard passed away
“This race is
huge for so many of our drivers,” promoter
Don Kazarian said on Tuesday. “Glenn did
so much for the sport. When you think
about it, there was nothing he did not or
could not do. But, I think the reason most
drivers want to win it is the fact that he
helped everybody. He just wanted to make
the sport better for everyone and that is
exactly what he did for a very long time.
Even though he passed away quite a few
years ago, his impact is still felt in the
sport and it always will be. It is an
honor to host his memorial race at The
PAS.”
Three of the
favorites in Saturday’s race will be the
top three in the USAC/CRA Series point
standings, Brody Roa of Garden Grove,
Concord’s Damion Gardner and “The Big Game
Hunter,” Austin Williams of Yorba Linda.
Williams, whose first ever sprint car race
at The PAS was in the inaugural Glenn
Howard Memorial in 2008, is the only
driver with more than one (he has two
wins) USAC/CRA win at The PAS this year.
Gardner and Ion, California’s Justin
Grant, have one win each.
Both of
Williams PAS victories this year came
after Gardner and Roa tangled and crashed
in their heated battle for the 2018
championship.
“It is
unfortunate for those guys, but I don’t
know exactly what happened if they took
each other out or it was a racing
incident,” a happy Williams told the crowd
after winning The PAS main event
five-weeks ago. “I stole another one from
them two guys. I will take them any way I
can get them. It sure feels good to get
over here (on the victory podium).”
In addition to
making his debut at The PAS ten-years ago
in the Glenn Howard Memorial, Williams,
27, also won the race in 2016. Gardner is
the all-time leading winner in the race
having taken home the hardware in 2014,
2015 and last year. Gardner’s former
teammate on the Mark Alexander team, Nic
Faas, is the only other driver with more
than one win in the race on the famous
Riverside County half-mile clay oval. He
posted his wins in 2011 and 2013. Tony
Jones, the late Bryan Clauson, Cory
Kruseman and Mike Spencer have one win
each in the Howard Memorial.
The PAS Senior
and Young Gun Sprints will be contesting
their next to last race of 2018 on
Saturday night. Former Speedway Motorcycle
racer and Wheel2Wheel Raceway promoter
John Aden, who resides in Apple Valley,
leads defending champion Richard McCormick
of Canyon Country by 14-points going into
Saturday’s Senior Sprint (drivers 45 and
older) race. Things are quite different in
the Young Guns (drivers 14-25 with no
prior sprint car experience) where Eddie
Tafoya Jr. of Chino Hills has a commanding
97-point advantage over Apple Valley’s
Austin Brundage.
Adult tickets
for Saturday’s USAC/CRA race are $25.00.
Seniors 65 and over get in for $20.00. For
active military members with proper id,
teens 13-18 with their school id and kids
6-12, it is just $5.00. Children 5 and
under are free. Parking on the fairgrounds
is $8.00.
Fans who would
like to make it a full Saturday of racing
can take in the So Cal Oval Karters and
SoCal Mowers race at SoCal Fair Motorcycle
Speedway at noon. The first year dirt oval
track is located about 200 feet outside
the fourth turn at The PAS. Admission to
the kart race is free.

Saturday and November’s 23rd Annual
