FIRST
2017 PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY CHAMPION TO BE
CROWNED SATURDAY!
By Scott Daloisio
(Perris, CA, August 15, 2017)
After two weeks off, Perris Auto
Speedway returns to action this Saturday
night, August 19th, with a quadruple
header show that includes the IMCA
Modifieds and the PASSCAR Street Stocks,
Super Stocks and the American Factory
Stocks. The night will see the track crown
its first champion of 2017 in the IMCA
Modified class. Spectator gates will open
at 5:00 PM and racing will start at 7:00.
Saturday will
feature the final points paying race for
the IMCA Modifieds in 2017. Big Bear’s
Billy Wormsbecker, a former champion at
the Victorville Speedway, comes into the
night with a 6-point lead over Bullhead
City, Arizona’s Mike Kirby. Kevin Hocking
of Huntington Beach sits third and trails
the leader by seven points. Chuck Becker
of Yucaipa and Kirby’s daughter Brenda,
who also resides in Bullhead City, round
out the top five and are 9 and 11-points
behind the leader respectively.
Big Bear’s
Billy Wormsbecker goes into Saturday’s
race as the IMCA point leader. Please give

The winner of
an IMCA main gets 40-points. Each
descending position drops by 1-point.
Therefore, technically, eight-drivers
mathematically have a shot at the crown.
Realistically, the champion should come
out of the top three.
Wormsbecker’s
key to the point lead has been
consistency. The 41-year-old has not
finished out of the top 10 at The PAS this
season. He began the year with a
second-place finish at the season opener
in March. He followed that up with a fifth
in April. In the last three races he has
placed sixth, tenth and eighth.
Kirby’s plight
has been somewhat different. The former
Lomita resident has won three of the first
five races. In the two he did not win, he
broke while running at the front and
finished 15th and 18th. Those finishes
have cost the past sprint car racing star
dearly and he will have his work cut out
for himself on Saturday to try and rip the
point lead away from Wormsbecker. Last
week Kirby raced in two nights in Cortez,
Colorado finishing second and third
(daughter Brenda finished seventh and
sixth in the same races).
Hocking, 40,
won The PAS IMCA championship two seasons
ago, but took most of last season off.
This season he has come back strong. He
started the year with 10th place finishes
in the first three races. He has caught
fire in the last two races finishing
fourth and third and earning another shot
at the title.
While Saturday
is the final IMCA points race at The PAS
for the year, the modifieds will still
have races at the famous Riverside County
half-mile clay in September in October.
Those two races, combined with the five
already contested this year, will
determine a separate Perris Auto Speedway
Modified champion.
Riverside’s
Luke Dodd and James Altman Jr. of Lake
Elsinore have dominated in the Street
Stock and American Factory Stocks thus far
in 2017. Dodd, who lists 2000, 2013 and
2016 PAS Championships in his resume, has
won four of the first five Street Stock
main events. In the Factory Stocks,
teenager Altman has three wins and two
second place finishes in five races. It
has been more competitive in the Super
Stocks where Fred Estrada of Riverside and
Tom “Slick” Smith of Norco each have a
pair of wins. Two-time class champ Dennis
Wooldridge of Riverside won the other
Super Stock main event on May 13th.
All drivers
will contest heat races, B main events if
applicable and A main events on Saturday.
Adult tickets
for Saturday’s show are $15.00. Active
military with proper id, teens 13-18 with
their school id and kids 6-12 get in for
just $5.00. Children 5 and under are free.
Parking on the fairgrounds is $8.00.

and best fireworks show in Riverside
