LKQ
PICK YOUR PART NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION
SATURDAY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY! By Scott Daloisio
(Perris, CA, July 24, 2017)
It will be time to get crazy on Saturday
July 29th when LKQ Pick Your Part presents
Night of Destruction #5 at “The Home of
the Craziest Show on Dirt,” Perris Auto
Speedway. The thrill a second program will
feature Figure 8 racing, a Figure 8
Trailer race, Demo Cross, Spectator racing
and Formula X. Spectator gates will open
at 5:00 PM and the wild racing will begin
at 7:00.
Early arriving
fans can get an up-close look at the cars,
meet the drivers and get autographs at the
on-track autograph and photo session that
will begin at 5:15.
After
Saturday, there will only be one Figure 8
race and one Figure 8 Trailer race left on
the 2017 schedule. That makes this week’s
event extremely important. Especially in
the Figure 8 class where rookie Jesse
Gordon of Beaumont leads brothers Earl Cox
of Norco and Kevin Cox of Ladera Ranch.
Heading into Saturday’s race, Gordon, a
respiratory therapist at the Kaiser
Permanente-Riverside Medical Center, leads
Earl by a mere three-points and Kevin by
only six-points.
Beaumont’s
Jesse Gordon, driving the “Bat Mobile,”
and Earl Cox fight for the lead earlier
this season in a Figure 8 race. Please

Gordon is a
second-generation racer who previously
competed in the IMCA Modifieds at The PAS.
The Cox brothers are also
second-generation racers who grew up
watching their father, Earl Sr., race
Figure 8 cars at Ascot. Heading into 2017,
all smart money would have been on Earl
Cox to win another championship. After
all, he has won more Figure 8 main events
than any driver in the history of Perris
Auto Speedway. It has caught many by
surprise that Gordon, who had never been
in a Figure 8 race before March, is
leading the championship chase.
Amazingly
through the first four races of the year,
the lead trio has made up the top three
positions in all, but one race. That was
in May when Earl’s new car was destroyed
in a violent infield crash. For the
record, Earl has won two of the first four
mains while his brother and Gordon have
each won one.
While Gordon
is vying to become the “New Sheriff in
Town” in the Figure 8’s, it is business as
usual for Menifee’s Ken McWilliams in the
Trailer Figure 8’s. Another driver who
used to watch his father compete at Ascot,
the 36-year-old CrossFit athlete has a
12-point lead over Rob Multhaupt of
Orange. Gordon is third in the Trailer
standings.

Trailer race win. Please give photo credit

Second year
PAS driver Garrett McCourt of Romoland
leads the way in Demo Cross championship
standings. While the Figure 8 and Figure 8
Trailer teams will wrap up their season
Labor Day weekend, the Demo Cross teams
will have two extra races on October 8th
during the Southern California Fair.
McCourt has a 21-point lead over Kevin Cox
from Huntington Beach and a 27-point
advantage over Tod Hughes of Riverside.
With four races to go, the standings could
be turned upside down by the end of the
season.
Romoland’s
Garrett McCourt, shown above banging his
way through the obstacles, leads the Demo
Cross standings. Please give photo credit
to Vane Ledgerwood.
In the “Iron
Man” overall standings that combines all
classes, Gordon has an almost
insurmountable 141-point cushion over last
year’s “Iron Man” David Holmes of Norco.
Multhaupt is third.
Rounding out
Saturday’s show will be Formula X and
Spectator racing. Finland’s Toni Ahokas
will head the field in Formula X. In the
Spectator class, wily veteran “Wide Open”
Wayne Williams of Tijuana, hopes to return
to his winning ways.
