FAMILIES
BATTLING FOR IMCA MODIFIED TITLE AT PERRIS
AUTO SPEEDWAY!
By Scott
Daloisio
(Perris, CA,
May 30, 2017)
When it comes
to families in racing one must look no
farther than the IMCA Modifieds when they
return to Perris Auto Speedway this
Saturday night, June 3rd. Four of the top
five places in the championship standings
are occupied by fathers and their racing
children and all are expected to be in
action Saturday. In addition to the
Modifieds, the PASSCAR Super Stocks,
Street Stocks and American Factory Stocks
will also be racing. Spectator gates will
open at 5:00 PM and the first race will be
at 7:00.
Big Bear’s Billy
Wormsbecker, a former Modified champion at
the Victorville Speedway, is the IMCA
point leader heading into round #4 at The
PAS. However, if he feels some families
may stick together and gang up on him, it
is perfectly understandable. Lomita’s Mike
Kirby, who has two wins in the first three
races, trails Wormsbecker by 5-points.
Trailing Kirby by 2-points is 2016
PAS/IMCA Modified champ Chuck Becker of
Yucaipa. Becker’s son Brandon, a San
Bernardino County Sheriff who also resides
in Yucaipa, is currently fourth. Kirby’s
daughter Brenda, a college student who
turned 21 two weeks ago, is fifth.
“When you watch these kids race, it is
clear the apple did not fall far from the
tree,” Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don
Kazarian said. “They are just like there
championship winning dads. Good racers who
are very determined and very safe drivers
as well. It has been fun watching them
development as drivers. On top of
everything else, they are extremely nice.”

Leader Wormsbecker and
fifth place Brenda Kirby are only
separated by 16-points. Thus far
Wormsbecker, 41, has parlayed second,
fifth and sixth finishes into the point
lead going into Saturday’s race.
While the fight for the point lead in the
Modifieds is tight, it is anything but
that in the PASSCAR Street Stocks.
Riverside’s Luke Dodd has won the first
three races of 2017 and carries a massive
57-point lead over Garden Grove racer
Bryce Mulvey going into Saturday. While
Dodd is running away at the front, the
next five drivers, Mulvey, Temecula
residents Henry Wesoloski and Blaine
Whitson, Eddie Gurwell of Riverside and
Murrieta’s Stefan Davies are only
separated by 6-points.
Despite
finishing a disappointing 10th in the last
PASSCAR Super Stock main event, El Cajon’s
Mike Lerwell has a 12-point advantage over
local racer Fred Estrada of Riverside
after three races. Sheffield, England
native Andy Moreton, Ricky Lee of Beaumont
and Huntington Beach’s Patrick Tone round
out the top five. Riverside’s Dennis
Wooldridge, who missed the season opener
in March, won the last main event three
weeks ago.
Rounding out Saturday’s
action will be the PASSCAR American
Factory Stocks. Lake Elsinore’s James
Altman Jr. warmed up for the last race on
May 13th by tossing around some bags of
concrete before heading to the track. The
exercise worked as he won his second
straight main event. Add his second-place
finish in the season opener and it is easy
to see why he is the point leader. Popular
Alyssa Smith of Norco, who turned 15 on
Sunday, is second. 2015 champion Jeff
Elder of Redlands, who flipped at the last
race, Mike Burks of Nuevo and Menifee’s
Kris Carnish round out the top five.
All drivers will contest heat races, B
main events if applicable and A main
events on Saturday.
Adult tickets
for Saturday’s show are $15.00. Active
military with proper id, teens 13-18 with
their school id and kids 6-12 get in for
just $5.00. Children 5 and under are free.
Parking on the fairgrounds is $8.00.
