SPECTATOR RACES AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY CONTINUE TO GROW!
(Perris, CA, June 4, 2014)
When they started three seasons ago at Perris Auto Speedway, the Spectator races were a hard sell. So hard in fact that the first field was mostly comprised of track employees to put on a show. That will not be the case this Saturday night, June 7th, when the Spectator races return to the track in a show that will also include Figure 8 racing, a Figure 8 trailer race and Democross. Spectator gates for the night of “Motorsports Mayhem” and family entertainment will open at 5:00 PM with racing at 7:00.

Those humbling days of not drawing cars from anywhere off of the Lake Perris Fairgrounds have faded out of the rear view mirror of track management, Now days the extremely popular event draws competitors from as far away as San Diego.

“It was tough to get people involved early on,” promoter Don Kazarian said on Wednesday afternoon. “I think most of it was the fact that people were scared that they may crash into other competing vehicles. That does not happen. Once people saw that it would not happen, more became involved and they love it.”

The Spectator races are contested on the tracks inner quarter-mile oval. There are only two vehicles on the track at a time. One starts in the middle of the front straight and one starts in the middle of the back straight. The races are two laps and the first driver to complete those two laps is the winner. The winner then moves on in the competition which is whittled down to a pair of undefeated drivers and they race a winner take all final.

The rules for the Spectator races are quite simple. Competing vehicles must be currently registered, licensed street vehicles. Drivers must be licensed and show proof of insurance on the car they plan on racing. Drivers also must have a helmet. Convertibles and motorcycles are not allowed to compete.

“The variety of the vehicles used has been amazing,” Kazarian laughed. “We have had all kinds of cars including Mustangs, Camaros, Hyundai’s, Hondas, pickups, VW’s, Volvos, Jeeps, Dune Buggies, a Denali, Mercedes, a minivan and more. That is what makes up the charm of the event. There are so many different types of competing vehicles. And, the fans go crazy pulling for their favorite type of vehicle and cheering against all others. It has turned into a great event for the competitors and those sitting in the grandstands.”

Temecula’s Henry Wesoloski won the first Spectator race of 2014 and then defeated “Wide Open” Wayne Williams in his potent white Hyundai in a match race at the end of the night. Williams dominated the action for the first couple of seasons the track staged spectator racing. He vows to return to the top of the heap starting with this Saturday’s race at the famous Riverside County racing facility.

Saturday will also include The PAS, “Drive for $100,000.00” for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. At intermission drivers will be in the stands collecting money in their helmets to help fight the dreaded disease.

Camping for all events at The PAS is available for $25.00 per night. The campground will open at noon on Friday. Tailgating in the spectator parking lot will begin at 1:00 PM for all PAS events as well.
