15-YEAR-OLD RACER NATHAN DERAGON SHINES OFF AND ON THE TRACK AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY!
(Perris, CA, May 13, 2014)
When the PASSCAR Series returns to Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday night, May 17th, one of the drivers fans need to keep an eye on is impressive Tonopah, Arizona 15-year-old Nathan Deragon. Last year’s Factory Stock Champion, the precocious teen moved up in class and dazzled everyone at the season opener in April starting near the back and moving all the way to fourth in the LoanMart Street Stock main event. In addition to Deragon in the Street Stocks, the Modifieds, Super Stocks, Factory Stocks and the CDCRA Dwarf Cars will also be in action on the famous Riverside County clay oval on Saturday. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM with racing at 6:30.

Deragon, who lived in El Cajon before relocating with his mom to Tonopah over the winter, has been racing for more than half of his life. He initially started competing in a Mini Dwarf Car at the Barona Speedway and then moved to a Junior Sprint Car at the same track. In 2012, he moved up to a full size car when he began competing at The PAS in the Factory Stock Class. Despite racing against a field comprised of adults, the young teen nearly won the championship his initial year. In 2014, there was no doubt about who the champion in the class was. Deragon won all but two of the main events last year and earned his first PAS title. The only two races he lost were the first one of the year when he had a huge lead when he blew an engine and the last race when he was taken out by another driver. In between, he won every single main event.

“No doubt about it, Nathan Deragon is a very special talent,” Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian said, “From the first day he arrived at The PAS he has been a very smooth and very patient driver. He understands the racecar and he can read the track and puts the car where it needs to be on the track. He is a natural with a ton of talent. The real deal.”

After winning last year’s Factory Stock crown, the young driver and his crew chief mom, Melody, decided it was time to move up a class to the LoanMart Street Stocks. In an interview during the season opener last month when asked if he had another championship up his sleeve for 2014, Deragon told the crowd, “This is probably going to be a year of learning for me.”

That year of learning seemed more like half a night. The youngster fought the car in hot laps and his heat race. That left him with a 19th place starting spot in the main event. On a night that saw more than its share of tangles in the middle of the field. Deragon skillfully weaved his way around the carnage, passing the involved cars and roaring by cars that were going in a straight line as well. Amazingly at the end of the race, he finished fourth.

“It was an astounding drive,” Kazarian said. “We looked up and all of a sudden at the end, Nathan was running in the lead pack. How he stayed out of all the chaos in the middle of the pack and also passed some of the faster drivers in the class is a testimony to his immense skills.”

Deragon hopes to continue to polish those skills and does not plan on stopping with Street Stocks or even Perris Auto Speedway.

“I hope to move up to Modifieds next,” Deragon told Dave Stall while a guest on the San Diego Motorsports radio show on Sunday night. “Eventually, someday, I would like to move up to NASCAR to race against Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon. I really want to thank my mom. Without her I would be nothing. She does so much for me and she is my number one supporter.”

Deragon’s mom has worked two jobs just to keep him on the racetrack. If that was not enough, she is also hands on at the track where she is the crew chief for her son and at home when they are working on the car.

Another impressive part of Deragon’s repertoire is how well-spoken he is. From describing what went on in the race, to thanking his sponsors and the troops, the fast rising star never misses a beat.

“The first time he was interviewed at The PAS everyone stopped what they were doing,” Kazarian laughed. “Everyone was taken aback with how well-spoken this young kid was. Many drivers, especially the younger ones, are not very comfortable when a microphone is shoved in their face, but Nathan sounded like he had been doing it for 20-years. I cannot say enough about how good of a racecar driver and what a fine young man Nathan is. We are proud that he is part of The PAS racing family.”

Away from racing, Deragon is quite the star as well when it comes to hitting the books. Studying online on the Taylion Virtual Academy, Deragon will earn his high school diploma next year at 16-years-old. He plans to further his studies in college and earn a degree in engineering. Of course, that will come in handy in tooling race cars around tracks on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit.

Camping for all events at The PAS is available for $25.00 per night. The campground will open at noon on Friday. Tailgating in the spectator parking lot will begin at 1:00 PM for all PAS events as well.
